What are ISO Standards?

Webster dictionary defines standard as “something set up and established by authority as a rule for the measure of quantity, weight, extent, value, or quality”

ISO standards are the rules set by International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Earlier this Organization was called as International Standards Organization and after a prolonged deliberation the organization shifted its focus from Organization to Standardization and hence now the name stands at International Organization for Standardization and referred to as ISO standards.

ISO has a membership of 164 national standards organizations and representation from companies, quality practitioners, academicians, government and private bodies who formed an independent conglomeration to write universally acceptable rules which are now called ISO standards. ISO has published standard for every conceivable product or services. Enforcement of these ISO standards uniformly across the globe has been possible through a ISO certification process which ensures that certain benchmarks setup in the standard are met by all facilities that intend to get certified.

ISO certification is conferred by ISO based on the recommendation by accredited ISO Certification Bodies. These ISO Certification Bodies must earn their credentials by registering in a forum called International Accreditation Forum (IAF) through Multi-Lateral Agreements (MLA)

ISO certification process is complicated to those who do not understand the intent of the standard. ISO standards auditors are trained to seek evidence for every claim made by any facility before they approve compliance to the standard. Thus, it is imperative that an evidence based system is built to ensure compliance and obtain ISO certification.

  • All facilities who require a comprehensive management system whose efficacy can be tested should get ISO certified.
  • Facilities requiring global acceptance for their products and services
  • Facilities requiring to provide confidence to customers regarding consistency in quality of their goods and services should get certified to ISO standards
