Quality Management System Standards

The family of Quality Management System Standards (or ISO 9000) is designed to help various organizations identify factors that they need to consider to ensure customer satisfaction and meet statutory prerequisites relating to certain products.  ISO 9001 pertains to the specific requirements companies have to fulfill to attain a standard certification.  ISO 9001 certification are done and given by independent parties to companies which have successfully completed all ISO 9001 requirements.

The adoption of ISO 9001 in a broader scale came about when major purchasers began requiring their suppliers to be an ISO 9001 certification holder for an increased value of stakeholders’ benefits.  Despite criticisms of not being useful to some organizations, ISO 9001 certification remains to be perceived as a necessary ISO standard certification that provides significant financial gain to those who have it.  Recent surveys conducted suggest that most ISO 9001 certification holders are more superior when it comes to return on assets and industry performance as compared to similar organizations that are not certified.

Trying to attract new customers or simply waiting for good opportunities to come may prove to be difficult if you are not qualified to get an ISO 9001 certification.  So what are the requirements that an organization has to comply with when vying for a certification?

ISO 9001:2008 Quality management systems — Requirements   is a document that details the things that you need to accomplish in order to demonstrate your company’s competence in meeting mandatory requirements and effective application of the system.  This is further enhanced by two other standards: ISO 9004:2009 Managing for the sustained success of an organization—A quality management approach and ISO 9000:2005 Quality management systems—Fundamentals and vocabulary.  The two standards are basically supplementary readings which give extensive explanation on how to improve and sustain quality management systems.  Therefore, they are excluded during third-party assessment.

Authorized accreditation bodies perform independent audits on companies, which upon success, are issued legitimate ISO 9001 compliance certificates that are recognized worldwide.  However before any certification is given or renewed, it is important that the auditor has been satisfied that sections 4 to 8 of Requirements has been properly implemented.  Also, these audits are based on the organization’s sample of sites, products, processes, functions and services.  If in case major nonconformities are identified, companies are then asked to present corrective action plan to the certification body.

ISO 9001:2015 Certification

Organizations that are ISO 9001 certified need to keep in mind that they have three (3) years to transition after the latest ISO 9001:2015 is published.  With the expiration of this standard drawing near, companies are recommended to familiarize themselves, as they continue to build their system, to the significant changes of the updated version of the current standard to avoid future complications.
